Safety Tips

Personal Safety

  • Carry only what you need--don't carry more than you actually will use for the tasks /chores/errands you'll do
  • Wear clothing and shoes which will allow you to move freely and quickly
  • Only carry small amounts of cash
  • Only carry the credit cards you need
  • Carry money and keys inside pockets--not a wallet or purse
  • Always have your keys in your hand when leaving a car or a building
  • Carry your cell phone in your hand or your pocket
  • Avoid carrying irreplaceable items inside a purse
  • Avoid carrying a purse unless necessary
  • If wearing a purse, choose one with a thin strap; wear the purse inside your coat
  • Do not carry important documents, numbers, passwords, etc. with you
  • Memorize your social security number, contact numbers, and ATM
  • Walk, jog, or bicycle with confidence
  • Avoid listening to music through earphones while out on the street as this can prevent you from paying attention to your surroundings
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times
  • Trust your instincts
  • Learn self-defense techniques
  • Avoid isolated and not well-lit areas
  • If followed while driving, go to a public place and honk to attract attention
  • Don't be afraid to make a scene if you need help

Shopping Safely

  • Beware of strangers who bump into you or get to close to you
  • If you've been bumped, make sure you still have your wallet
  • Don't leave your wallet, purse, or other belongings unattended
  • Only take out the necessary amount when paying with cash
  • Keep money, checkbook, and credit/debit cards out of others' sight when paying
  • Do not allow anyone to carry your bags
  • Have your car keys in hand before leaving the store
  • Gifts and valuables should be hidden from clear view; the best place is in the car's trunk
  • Reduce the chance of being victimized--shop with a friend or family member
  • Carry a  minimal amount of cash and cards for shopping, regardless of the shopping season
