Metro Bus Safety
The King County Metro transit system is among the finest in the country and many of us, either occasionally or regularly, find ourselves "hopping aboard" a Metro bus. What follows are tips to make our Metro bus travels safer and more pleasant:
- Minimize wait time for bus arrivals and departures--know what time to be at a bus stop before leaving home or work
- Be aware of your surroundings; trust your instincts
- Be safely visible at bus stops but don't stand too near curbs or stand beyond yellow safety lines in Metro transit tunnel
- Board/depart bus only after bus comes to a complete stop
- Inform bus driver of your intentions before loading/unloading a bicycle from the bike rack
- Allow passengers to exit the bus before you board
- Have fare ready--exact change, scrip, bus tickets or ORCA fare card in hand
- If seats are unavailable, stand in bus aisle and hold handrails or straps--don't block doors or stairwells
- Keep aisles clear of bags and avoid stretching legs into aisle
- Don't lie down on bus seats; sit upright at all times and avoid falling asleep on the bus
- Use headphone when using electronic devices--minimize your noise as much as feasible
- Keep possessions/valuables close and protected--never leave your things unattended
- Be respectful of the bus driver and fellow passengers--refrain from loud arguments, harassment, etc.
- Respect transit property--don't litter on a bus and use approved trash or recycling receptacles at stops and stations
- Don't eat, smoke, or drink alcoholic beverages while on a bus
- Alert the bus driver of problems/problematic people--if you feel uncomfortable or threatened, inform the driver ASAP
- Report suspicious or criminal activity to the bus driver or call 9-1-1 (see "Calling 9-1-1" web page on this site)
- After departing, wait until the bus leaves the stop to cross the street
- Use Metro Transit facilities fro transportation purposes only
