Light Rail Safety

  • In South East Seattle, from just south of the Henderson Street station to just south of the Mount Baker stop, the Link Light Rail travels at-grade, that is, street-level; therefore, it is crucial that pedestrians, drivers, and light rail passengers understand that it is far more difficult for a train to suddenly stop to avoid a collision than it is for a person or a car or truck.  With this key fact in mind, understand that a Light Rail train has the right-of-way regardless of the traffic signal.  What follows are more tips to keep you safe whether you use Link Light Rail or not:

  • Light Rail trains have the right of way REGARDLESS of the traffic signal and cannot stop quickly
  • Always stay alert around trains
  • Never step in front of a train
  • Always look both ways before crossing the track either as a pedestrian or in a vehicle
  • Because of the traffic noise you may not hear the Link Light Rail; lower the volume in your headphones/speakers
  • If you are a pedestrian, only cross at designated crosswalks
  • Obey all signals and warning signs
  • Never walk on or play around train tracks
  • Never touch or throw items near or over the overhead electrical lines
  • Never touch a fallen electrical line
  • Never throw anything at the trains nor put anything on the train tacks
  • Never walk beyond the end of the station platform
  • When waiting for the train, stay behind the yellow line on the station platform
  • Always hold a small child's hand while waiting for Link Light rail trains
  • Always wait until the train has completely stopped to board
  • Allow others to exit before boarding
  • Keep children close and board together
  • Do not block doorways or emergency exits
  • Do not hold doors open when they start to close or place objects in a closing door
  • Always remain seated until the train comes to a complete stop
  • If no seats are available stand in the aisle and hold an overhead strap
  • Put away valuables such as laptops, phones, and tablets before exiting the Link Light Rail
  • If travelling at night, refrain from using electronics while on train and when leaving train station
